Errors and Misadventures

AC Refrigerator:
Originally I purchased an AC refrigerator which was Energy Star. I had not considered the wattage necessary to keep the inverter running 24/7. I replaced it with a DC refrigerator which works great and does not need the inverter to be running.

Rodents in Engine:
Rodents nested in the engine and ate the wiring twice while the van was in Fairplay. Measures to counteract this happening again which appear to be working include peppermint spray, Brass wool on nesting sites, MouseBlocker PRO 120V with lights, noise and ultrasound, Zapplight ZAPP-RR LED Light Bulb & Sonic Repeller, and an additional Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller.

Gravel got into Brake Lining:
This occurred on a very early trip and happened to be on my birthday. Fortunately a very nice repairman in a small town in Texas dropped everything to fix the problem.

DC-DC charger problems:
The Victron Orion Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated 12/12-30 never worked properly and was not needed because the solar charging worked so well. It misread the battery voltage as being too high and stopped charging before the charge was complete. The Bluetooth interface was primitive and poorly designed. Fortunately, a service person noted that the positive and negative wires installed under the car were adjacent to the exhaust pipe. They had overheated and began to fuse. I pulled out all of these wires and removed the DC-DC charger. I replaced the charger with Victron Energy Blue Smart IP22 12V 30A AC-DC Charger using the same internal wiring. The new AC-DC charger works very well and has a good Bluetooth interface but has not been needed so far.

BMV Monitor Started to Misread the Battery Voltage:
Over several months the Victron BMV-712 Battery Monitor started to underread the battery voltage by about .55V relative to actual. The Victron SmartSolar Charge Controller MPPT 100/50 stated the same battery voltage as direct measurement of the battery. I disconnected the BMV Monitor from the VE.Smart networking which was overriding the true battery voltage. The power data from the BMV Monitor appeared to be pretty accurate for a while so I didn't think it necessary to replace the monitor initially but then had to replace it with the Victron Energy SmartShunt 500 amp Battery Monitor which was cheaper and did not have the unneeded digital display.

Broken Windshield:
We had a spring snowstorm which dropped 20 inches of wet snow on the roof in Fairplay. Unfortunately, the van was parked under the roof and when the snow slid off of the roof it shattered the windshield.

Charge Controller Problems:
1) Several times the battery voltage reading on the charge controller was jumping all over and was very wrong. The cause was a loose hot wire to the charge controller battery input(loosening presumably caused by the van motion). I crimped a ferrule at the end of this wire and reinserted the wire which appears to work much better.
2) Apparently the charge controller shuts off in very high heat. This occurred in Phoenix with temperatures to 113 degrees Farenheit.
